Smith Wigglesworth- Redeemed and Free from our Past Because of the Blood
“Inasmuch then as children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Hebrews 2: 14, 15
We are redeemed by His blood and brought into the family of the Lord God. The blood separated, consecrated, and marked us as His own possession. Smith Wigglesworth explained:
“This blessed salvation through the blood of Jesus will free you from all the power of Satan and make you a join-heir with Christ. Oh, this is a glorious inheritance that we have in Jesus Christ. Glory to God! Jesus was manifested in the flesh, manifested to destroy the works of the Devil.”
The blood brought us out to bring us in. Yes, the blood redeemed us from the world and the domain of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of Jesus. The blood can then cleanse us from sin and make us pure before the Lord God.
The blood, which speaks of His obedience and love, takes us and makes us sons and daughters.
“Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which he suffered.”
Hebrews 5: 8
Jesus the Son learned obedience through what He suffered, and the blood is the most powerful witness of His sufferings and, therefore, His obedience. His blood never loses its power, and through His blood, we can be freed from the consequences of our disobedience and brought into the righteousness of Christ. Smith explained:
“Sin means death to the spiritual man unless it is cleansed by the blood of Jesus.”
Sin separates us from the Lord and hinders us from enjoying true fellowship with others.
“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1: 7
If we are to have real fellowship, one with another, we first must have genuine fellowship with Him. Such fellowship demands that we come and remain under the blood of Jesus. The blood of Jesus reveals the tenderheartedness of the Lord God. The blood reveals how He sees us and how far He will go to reach us.
The blood releases us from the past. Many believers are held captive by their past. They can never outrun their past and the mistakes they made.
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out of my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before Me.”
Psalm 51: 1-3
These words of David often accurately reflect the heart of many believers. They remain stuck, always looking back and never able to move forward. The degree that we look back, we miss what the Lord has for us today and where He wants to take us to tomorrow. The world, our flesh, and the devil will always remind us of our failures to keep us looking back.
Smith explained:
“He sees our bitter tears and our weeping night after night. These is none like Him. He knows; He forgives. We cannot forgive ourselves; we oftentimes would give the world to forget, but we cannot. The devil won’t let us forget. But God has forgiven and forgotten. Which are you going to believe? Believe God. I know the past is under the blood of Christ and that God has forgiven and forgotten, for when He forgives, He forgets. Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! We are baptized to believe and receive.”
The blood is the key and power to release us from fear and our past and lift us into God’s righteousness.
“And they overcame him, by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives to the death.”
Revelation 12: 11
The blood overcomes us. When the Children of Israel marked their houses with the blood in the Exodus, the destroyer couldn’t touch them. That blood was the blood of animals. How much more the absolutely perfect and righteous blood of the Lord God.
As we understand by faith the power of the blood, the blood sets us free from our sins and the past. The blood of Jesus does not just cover the sin but washes it away. Our sin is completely gone if we repent and come under the blood. Our lives must always be marked by blood. If we sin, then we must be quick to repent and get back under the powerful blood.
“There is a way into the kingdom of heaven, and it is through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
It is always through the blood that we can enter into the Kingdom and the things He has for us. That is why Smith explained:
“Sin can only be removed by repentance. When you repent deeply enough, you will find repentance. Never cover up sin. Sins must be judged. Sins must be brought to the blood of Christ. When you have a perfect confidence between you and God, it is amazing how your prayers rise. You catch fire, you are filled with zeal, your inspiration is tremendous, you find out that the Spirit prays through you, and you live in a place of blessing.”
There is a cost to sin and a consequence to sin. When we fail to repent and get sin under the blood, we see the results in our life. For all sin must be judged, and all sin results in death. But the blood! When we come to the blood through repentance and humility, the blood becomes the price paid through His death. For life is in the blood. Our disobedience and imperfection are met with His absolute obedience and perfection realized in the blood.
The blood doesn’t cover but washes us clean. Further, the blood pays the price that brings us into the family. Through the blood, we stand boldly as sons and daughters. The blood made us heirs and co-heirs, and the blood activated the covenant so that we might dare ask and receive.
The blood points us to our new identity in Christ, the blood-bought church. Just as the blood discriminates separated the Children of Israel from the Egyptians and denied the enemy any authority to touch the Children of Israel. The blood declared that they were His and came under His protection.
“The blood can make the vilest clean, His blood can make the vilest clean, His blood avails for me, His blood avails to me.”
Do we appreciate and recognize the power of the blood in our lives? The blood is the proof that His wrath was poured out and satisfied, and as a result, through faith, our sin is washed away.
“For God did not appoint us to wrath, but not to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5: 9
We are the blood-bought Church so you can’t pour wrath out on that which comes under the blood. Do we understand the authority of the blood and how it speaks louder? The blood speaks of our salvation and hope. Regarding this hope:
“So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”
Hebrews 9: 28
Of this hope and salvation, Paul said:
“But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5: 8-11
