Smith Wigglesworth- Be Not Afraid, Only Believe

We see a declaration of His absolute authority and position in the Name. His Name declares He is the First and the Last, before all and above all. He is absolute. Jesus, in His earthly ministry, added color, depth, and clarity to the Name. He demonstrated that He is absolute in power and authority and abounding in lovingkindness.

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

1 John 3: 8

Now if we add to this verse the following:

“Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your Name those whom You have given to Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your Name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son or perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.”

John 17: 11, 12

Let’s add this verse:

“I have manifested Your Name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your Word.”

John 17: 6

The Name of the Father was the unspeakable Name, YHWH. Jesus manifested or revealed the Name through everything He did as He demonstrated the love of the Father for us. In Mark chapter five, we see the account of the healing of Jairus’ daughter.

“And begged Him earnestly, saying, ‘My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”

Mark 5: 21

You can easily imagine how desperate Jairus was; he knew Jesus was the answer. Smith Wigglesworth said:

“Be not afraid, only believe.’ This is one of those marvelous truths of the Scriptures that is written for our help, that we may believe as we see the almightiness of God and also our privilege, not only to enter in by faith, but to become partakers of the blessing He wants to give us.”

We must recognize who He is and that He is the Almighty God. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega. He is greater than whatever we face. Jairus saw and heard all the things Jesus had done, and it stirred faith in him as he recognized who Jesus was. This was tested when the woman with the issue of blood delayed Jesus. Today we have lost sight of Jesus, who He really is, and His authority. When Jesus came on assignment from Heaven with the purpose of destroying the works of the enemy, He was given the authority for that assignment from the Father.

Smith explained:

“My message is on the lines of faith. Because some do not hear in faith, it profits them nothing. There is a hearing of faith and a hearing which means nothing more than listening to words. I beseech you to see to it that everything done may bring not only blessing to you but strength and character, and that you may be able to see the goodness of God in this meeting.”

If we go back to the ministry of Jesus and how He revealed the Name of the Father, we can see He fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy:

“Therefore My people shall know My Name; therefore they shall know in that day that I am He who speaks; ‘Behold, it is I.’”

Isaiah 62: 6

Now we can read the above verse or any of the above verses and be blessed by them but never hear the verses. Unless we hear them with ears that hear and with faith, the Word does not benefit us. In the Gospels, we see various accounts of people being healed, and how they were healed varied. The centurion’s servant is healed by a word instantly. But Jairus has a journey to walk before he will see his miracle. On the journey, Jesus is surrounded by a crowd who are touching Him, and yet none got healed until the woman with the issue of blood pressed in.

Smith explained:

“I want to impress upon you the importance of believing what the Scripture says, and I may have many things to relate about people who dared to believe God until it came to pass. This is a wonderful Word In fact all of the Word of God is wonderful. It is an everlasting Word, a Word of power, a Word of health, a Word of substance, a Word of life. It gives life into the very nature, to everyone that lays hold of it, if he believes it is a need, many times, that brings us the blessing.”

He is the Word and has come to destroy the enemy’s works. We can’t heal ourselves; only He can because He is the Lord our Healer, and He has the authority to heal. He calls us to believe in God and also believe in Him. We must never walk around with a small vision of Jesus and a big one of our problems.

“The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the deliverance is of the Lord.”

Proverbs 21: 31

We have a part to play but at the end of the day, Jesus gives us the victory. We must make sure that issues of our hearts do not prevent or hinder the Lord. The journey the Lord takes us on until we receive our breakthrough is all about dealing with our hearts. When we, like Jairus, walk it out and get our breakthrough, we never forget it.

Smith shared a story of how he got healed:

“But one night, thirty years ago, I was carried home helpless. We knew very little about divine healing, but we prayed through. It is thirty years and more since God healed me. I am sixty-eight years old and fresher, in better health, and more fit for work than I was at that time. It was a most wonderful experience when the life of God becomes the life of man. The divine power that sweeps through the organism, cleaning the blood, makes the man fresh every day. The life of God is resurrection power.”

When He heals, He always does more for He desires to make us whole. Whatever we are going through often impacts us in many ways. He desires that we stand completely whole with nothing missing and nothing lacking.

But we must, like Jairus, refuse to quit. The journey may not be fun, but we must learn how to pray through until victory comes. Smith was suffering from appendicitis and was told it was too late to do anything, and he was going to die. Smith and his family had prayed and prayed, but nothing changed. Then two bold believers came. When the doctor had left, they began to pray, for they understood faith and authority. Whether we walk by faith or by fear is determined by what carries the greatest authority in our lives.

Smith explained:

“When he was nicely out of the house an old lady and a young man who knew how to pray came in. The young man put his knees on the bed and said, ‘Come out, you devil, in the Name of Jesus.’ It was a goo

D job, we had no time for argument, and instantly I was free. Oh, hallelujah! I was as free as I am now. I never believed that any person ought to be in bed in the daytime and I jumped up and went downstairs.”

When believers recognize who He is and His authority and that He delegated authority to us, they pray and act with authority, trusting that He will enforce the authority He delegated. He expects us to act on the authority given, knowing it is His job to make things happen, not ours. He confirms the authority He delegates.

Smith was at a meeting and told the leaders it was time they started to do what they were supposed to do. We always want someone else to do it because we fear that we will fail, or in other words, we walk in the fear of death. But if we understand, He has given us a purpose and call and backed that with the authority to fulfill the call. We can come before the Lord on the basis of what He did and the call He has given us and expect to receive. He will fully support us as we move forward in obedience. Many believers don’t abide long enough in His Word and move forward in their call.

Smith said:

“Paul the apostle, left the people to do the work and passed on to another place- I have been here long enough now, you do the work.’ So he went to the meeting. When he came back he said: ‘We have had a wonderful time.’ ‘What happened?’ He said: ‘I invited them all out, took off my coat, and rolled up my sleeves, and prayed and they all were healed. I did just like you did.’ Jesus says, ‘I give unto you power over all the power of the enemy’ (Luke 10: 19).”

If we hear the Word as absolute authority and with faith, then we do the Word. We have authority because we come under the authority of the Word. You can’t defeat whatever you are facing in your power; you must first come out from being under the wrong authority and come under the Word.

Going back to Jairus’ daughter, Smith explained:

“God brings a remarkable, glorious facto to our minds tonight, the healing of a little helpless girl. The physicians failed. The mother said to the father: ‘There is only one hope- if you can see Jesus! As sure as you can meet Jesus our daughter will live.’ Do you think it is possible for anybody anywhere to go looking for Jesus without seeing Him? Is it possible to think about Jesus without Jesus drawing near? No! This man knew there was power in the Name of Jesus: …”In My Name shall they cast our devils. But we must be sure we know that Name, for in Acts 19 the seven sons of Sceva said to the man possessed with devil, ‘We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preached to come out.’ The evil spirit said, ‘I know Paul and I know Jesus, but who are you.”

We can’t walk in someone else’s revelation. We must meet with Jesus, and we know who He is. He must be the Almighty God. Sadly, for too many believers, Jesus is too small in them, and their problems too big. Remember, with Jairus, it appeared as if Jesus was too late, but the journey revealed the heart of Jairus. He was clearly a good man and walked in love; faith always works with love. But he was also double-minded, walking in both faith and fear. When all had failed and Jairus knew if Jesus didn’t move it was all over. Jairus had nothing more to fear because the worst had happened, but he had to hear the Words of Jesus. When we are in the storm, we need not someone else’ revelation but hear the Master’s voice. We must get alone and seek His face until we hear His voice.

Smith said:

“But Jesus said, ‘Be not afraid, only believe (Mark 5: 36). He speaks the Word just in time! Jesus is never behind time. When the tumult is the worst, the pain the most severe, the cancer gripping the body, then the Word comes, ‘Only believe.’ When everything seems as though it will fail, and is practically hopeless, the Word of God comes to us, ‘Only believe.”

Yes, the Word comes and commands us “Only believe.” Jesus didn’t give Jairus a suggestion but a command. When we are under attack and fear is all around, we must hear His divine command speaking into our lives.

Jesus comes with a now Word when all has failed, and if we receive it and His authority, it will break everything open. Jesus came to Jairus’ house; they had all gathered, broken and mourning with grief. But Jesus! Yes, He came and changed everything. We need His voice to speak loud and with authority in our lives. The victory must start by allowing Him to clean the house and remove all the wrong voices.

Smith said:

There is a wonderful word that God wants you to hear. Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection, and the life…’ (John 11: 25). The believer may fall asleep, but the believer doesn’t die. Oh, that people would understand the deep things of God- it would change the whole situation. It makes you look out with a glorious hope to the day when the Lord shall come…. Oh, the remarkableness of our Lord Jesus! I want to impress upon you the importance of realizing that He is in the midst. No person need be without the knowledge that they are not only saved, but that God can live in these bodies.
